Atomic Bomb On Hiroshima, By Wilfred Burchett - 896 Words

â€Å"When you arrive in Hiroshima, you can look around and for 25 and perhaps 30 square miles you can see hardly a building. It gives you an empty feeling in the stomach to see such man-made devastation† – Wilfred Burchett. That is a quote directly from Wilfred Burchett speaking of the damage that was left after the judgment call from President Harry Truman to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Today my assignment is to consider myself as President Truman at that time and settle on if I would have taken the same course of action as the commander and chief. Truman indeed faced an impracticable choice preceding his giving of the command to drop the bomb; either he could risk the lives of fifty percent of American soldiers or he could use the new found nuclear weapon on the people and cities of Japan. Most Americans have questioned the acts of President Truman back in those days, as a matter of fact those debates still carry on today; conversely today I try to put mys elf in his shoes to see if he was justified in his decision. . First I would like to look at some of the facts that led up to the pivotal verdict which caused so much destruction to Japan and its people. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the United States would engage in World War II against Japan. The Republican Party: Overall Issues, 1860-1868 Essay The Republican party during the 1860s was known as the party moreconcerned with civil rights and the common American. This came about througha series of sweeping changes in the party that occurred during two major timeperiods: the 1860-1864 and 1864-1868. The changes in the party reflected theattitude in the North as opposed to the confederate, democratic South. The mainissue that divided the two was slavery and its implications for control of thenation. Near the end of the Reconstruction Era, the Republican party underwenteven more changes. With the slavery issue settled in their eyes, scandals inthe party, and the threat of violence from various hate groups keeping freedmenfrom voting, its attentions began to turn elsewhere. The metamorphosis that theparty underwent through the 1860s was a direct result of the popular opinion inthe North at the time. As the detestment of slavery grew in the North, so didthe Republican legislation grow more severe against it, starting with the partyplatforms and ending with the ratification of the 14th Amendment. Change in the economic environment caused an increase investment by farmers in dairy products leading to a reduction in beef production as well as a concern among processors that this would lower the quality of beef products (Bell, Mcloughlin and Shelman, 2011, P.3). With respect to porter five forces, there were three major players in the beef processing industry and who accounted for 60-65% of the capacity and output. The perception was that these competitors would rather suffer lower margins than take compromises and retailers used this weakness to play processors against eac h other. Conditioning, strength, and speed have been the focal points of athletic training for years; however, the research on nutritional elements indicates their importance to an athlete's optimal performance. Knowing the proper food to eat before, during, and after a physical activity can help an athlete in achieving their desired performance.    The most important nutrient categories are starches, minerals, sugars, and electrolytes. Starches and minerals fit into the area of complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are polysaccharides (many sugars bonded together). Because of the multiple bonds, polysaccharides are able to store energy for later use. Simple sugars make up the other group of carbohydrates. The bonding structures of simple sugars are much less advanced that than those of complex carbohydrates. This allows for the burning of simple sugars in an athlete's body. Electrolytes are a category of their own because they are helpful to an athlete all of the time, whether energy storage or energy burning is needed.    Minerals are a group of compounds that allow for endurance in an athletic competition. Potassium is a common mineral associated with muscle cramping. A lack of potassium is the cause of muscle cramping during a sporting event. Minerals must be taken in at least six hours before the time of activity.
